Originally from Uganda, Mildred Barya is a writer and current faculty member at the University of North Carolina Asheville. She will be reading from some of her works, which include poetry, short stories and non-fiction writing. In 2008, she was awarded the Pan African Literary Forum Prize for Africana Fiction, and earlier gained recognition for her first two poetry collections, Men Love Chocolates But They Don’t Say (2002) and The Price of Memory: After the Tsunami (2008).
This free, public event was a pleasure to photograph. Mildred is excellent at reciting her prose. She uses inflection and hand gestures to keep the listener engaged. Her words can easily take you on a journey to another land, in another time, as another creature.
